Buffalo, New York – Residents across western New York should prepare for repeated rounds of rain through Wednesday as a moisture-rich weather pattern increases the potential for localized flash flooding. While the rainfall will provide much-needed moisture for many areas, periods of heavier downpours could quickly overwhelm poor drainage locations and low-lying roads.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a very moist air mass combined with a passing area of low pressure will support multiple rounds of rainfall through Wednesday, with showers continuing into Thursday. The Weather Prediction Center has placed portions of western and central New York under a Level 1 of 4 Marginal Risk for excessive rainfall today and Wednesday, indicating isolated instances of flash flooding are possible.
Communities including Buffalo, Rochester, Jamestown, Batavia, Geneseo, Wellsville and surrounding areas may experience brief periods of heavy rain capable of reducing visibility and creating ponding on roads. Urban locations, small streams and areas with poor drainage will be the most vulnerable if heavier rain bands repeatedly move over the same locations.
Although widespread flooding is not expected, motorists should use extra caution during heavier downpours and never drive through water-covered roadways. Residents should also keep storm drains clear where possible and monitor conditions if they live in flood-prone areas.
The unsettled pattern is expected to continue through Wednesday before gradually easing later in the week. Additional flood advisories or warnings could be issued if heavier rainfall develops over the same locations.
