Phoenix, Arizona – The desert isn’t getting a break from the heat anytime soon. Even before sunrise, temperatures remain in the 90s across the Valley, and another stretch of dangerously hot afternoons is expected to keep the Phoenix metro under an Extreme Heat Warning through midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. MST Wednesday for south-central Arizona, including the Phoenix metropolitan area. Afternoon temperatures are expected to range from 108 to 113 degrees, creating a Major Heat Risk with a significant increase in the likelihood of heat-related illnesses. In Maricopa County, officials encourage residents needing relief to call 2-1-1 for information on free cooling centers, transportation, water and other assistance.

Phoenix is forecast to reach 110 degrees today with a heat index as high as 113 degrees under sunny skies. Overnight temperatures will only fall to around 90 degrees, providing little opportunity for homes and the human body to cool. Travel along Interstates 10 and 17, Loop 101 and Loop 202 should remain weather-free, but the prolonged heat can quickly become dangerous for motorists, outdoor workers and anyone without access to air conditioning.

A slight 10% chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms is possible Monday night and Tuesday, but any storms that develop will be isolated and provide little widespread relief. Temperatures remain near 109 degrees Tuesday, climb to 111 degrees Wednesday, and reach 113 degrees Thursday, extending one of the hottest stretches of the summer.

Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, drink water frequently even if you don’t feel thirsty, wear lightweight clothing and check on neighbors, especially older adults and anyone without reliable cooling. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.

The long-range outlook continues to support above-normal temperatures into early August, indicating the persistent desert heat is likely to continue beyond this week.
