Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – Sunshine is already baking roads and parking lots across central Oklahoma, and the hottest part of the day is still ahead. Anyone stepping outside this afternoon will encounter dangerous heat capable of pushing “feels-like” temperatures near 109 degrees. Outdoor workers, athletes and anyone without reliable air conditioning face the greatest risk as the prolonged summer heat continues.

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from noon until 9 p.m. CDT today for much of central, western and southern Oklahoma, along with portions of northern Texas. Heat index values are expected to climb as high as 109 degrees, creating conditions that can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses without frequent breaks and hydration.

Oklahoma City is expected to reach 103 degrees this afternoon under mostly sunny skies, with south-southwest winds around 9 to 11 mph. Major travel routes including Interstates 35, 40 and 44 will remain dry, but pavement temperatures will soar well above the official air temperature. Drivers should keep extra water in their vehicles and never leave children or pets inside parked cars, even for a few minutes.

The dangerous heat is part of a much broader heat wave stretching across the Plains and the southern United States. While central Oklahoma stays mostly dry through midweek, the pattern begins to shift later this week as isolated thunderstorms return to the region. Any storm that develops could produce lightning and brief heavy rainfall, although widespread severe weather is not expected at this time.

Temperatures remain remarkably consistent through Thursday, with highs holding near or above the century mark before easing into the lower 90s by the weekend. The extended outlook also points toward above-normal temperatures continuing into the 6-to-10-day period, meaning summer heat is likely to remain a dominant weather story.

Stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, and check on elderly neighbors and anyone without air conditioning. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned building.
