Kansas City, Mo. – Heat is already radiating from streets and rooftops across the Kansas City metro, and the most dangerous conditions are still expected this afternoon. Triple-digit temperatures paired with oppressive humidity will push the heat index to 111 degrees, creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday for portions of western Missouri and eastern Kansas, including Kansas City, Independence, Lee’s Summit, Liberty, Overland Park, Olathe, Shawnee and surrounding communities. Forecasters expect afternoon temperatures near 101 degrees, with heat index values reaching 111 degrees.
The prolonged heat will increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially for outdoor workers, athletes and anyone without access to air conditioning. Warm nighttime temperatures near 80 degrees will provide little relief, allowing heat stress to build through the evening. Drink water frequently, take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations and check on elderly neighbors and anyone without reliable cooling.
Travelers along I-70, I-35, I-435, U.S. 71 and I-49 should prepare for dangerous conditions if vehicles become disabled. Carry extra water, monitor engine temperatures during longer trips and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
Meteorologists say the persistent heat is tied to a strong upper-level ridge parked across the central United States. While isolated showers cannot be ruled out over parts of central Missouri later today, widespread rainfall is not expected across the Kansas City metro. Tornado potential remains very low through midweek, although thunderstorm chances increase later in the week as the weather pattern begins to shift.
By Tuesday, temperatures ease slightly with a high near 92 degrees, though it will still feel close to 100 degrees during the afternoon. Wednesday brings another step down in temperatures with a high around 90 degrees, offering gradual relief from the prolonged heat. Better chances for showers and thunderstorms arrive Thursday night into Friday, when locally heavy rainfall and lightning could affect travel.
The 6-to-10-day outlook continues to favor above-normal temperatures, although the hottest conditions should gradually ease heading into next weekend.
