Columbia, S.C. – Heat is quickly taking center stage across the Midlands, and the pavement is already warming under bright summer sunshine. While early fog has faded, the biggest weather story now is building heat that could make it feel as hot as 110 degrees by Tuesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, areas of morning fog gave way to mostly sunny skies with afternoon temperatures climbing to 93 degrees today. Heat index values will approach 100 degrees, making it important to stay hydrated if you’re spending time outdoors. Travel conditions along Interstates 20, 26, and 77 remain favorable, but vehicles parked in direct sun will heat rapidly.

The hottest day of the stretch arrives Tuesday. High temperatures are expected to reach 97 degrees, while humidity pushes the heat index to around 110 degrees during the afternoon. This level of heat can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for anyone working outside or participating in sports. Forecast guidance also shows a slight chance of evening thunderstorms, but widespread rainfall is not expected to provide meaningful cooling.

By Wednesday, sunshine continues with a high near 94 degrees, although humidity should be a bit more manageable. Dry weather also extends into Thursday and Friday, keeping outdoor plans on track while maintaining above-average summer warmth.

Across much of the South, dangerous heat continues beneath a broad upper-level ridge. While the greatest severe thunderstorm threats remain well north of South Carolina, isolated thunderstorms are always capable of producing lightning and brief gusty winds during the summer. Residents should remain weather-aware if storms develop.

Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon. Drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.

Looking beyond this week, the Climate Prediction Center’s 6-to-10-day outlook favors above-normal temperatures across South Carolina, suggesting the summer heat will continue into early next week.
