Baltimore, Md. – Bright skies are giving way to towering clouds across central Maryland as warmth and humidity build through the day. Streets may stay dry for much of the morning, but conditions become increasingly favorable for scattered thunderstorms this afternoon, with a much wetter period expected by Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, Baltimore will climb to 88 degrees with mostly sunny skies before scattered showers and thunderstorms begin developing after early afternoon. Rain chances remain relatively limited today at 30%, but the atmosphere becomes significantly more active heading into Tuesday, when rain and thunderstorms become likely across much of the Baltimore-Washington corridor.
Drivers along Interstate 95, Interstate 83, Interstate 695, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and U.S. 40 should be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions later today and especially Tuesday. Brief downpours could reduce visibility, while isolated thunderstorms may produce gusty winds and dangerous lightning. If you’re commuting during the afternoon or evening, allow extra travel time and avoid driving through water-covered roads.
Tuesday brings the highest confidence for widespread rainfall. Forecast guidance calls for a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms, with rainfall amounts generally between one-half and three-quarters of an inch, although locally higher totals are possible beneath stronger storms. While widespread severe weather is not currently expected, a few storms could still produce gusty winds, frequent lightning, and localized ponding on streets.
By Wednesday, the pattern begins improving. High temperatures remain seasonably warm near 86 degrees, but rain coverage decreases to around 40% during the afternoon before sunshine becomes more dominant later in the week. Thursday and Friday look considerably quieter, featuring mostly sunny skies and highs in the middle to upper 80s.
Looking farther ahead, the Climate Prediction Center’s 6-to-10-day outlook continues to favor above-normal temperatures across the Mid-Atlantic, suggesting summer warmth will remain firmly in place into next week.
