Nashville, Tennessee – Residents across Middle Tennessee should prepare for two weather concerns over the next several days as scattered thunderstorms today give way to dangerous heat and humidity beginning Monday, with heat index values climbing into the triple digits.

According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, showers and thunderstorms will remain possible today, primarily north of Interstate 40, with a few storms becoming strong enough to produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall. While rain coverage will be limited, motorists could encounter brief downpours and reduced visibility, especially during the afternoon.

The focus quickly shifts to building heat Monday and Tuesday as temperatures climb into the upper 80s and upper 90s across Middle Tennessee. Heat index values are expected to reach the low 100s, especially west of the Cumberland Plateau, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Communities including Nashville, Clarksville, Cookeville, Columbia, Murfreesboro and surrounding areas should stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing and limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon. Residents are also encouraged to check on older adults, children and pets, who are especially vulnerable during prolonged periods of heat.

Rain chances diminish through much of the workweek, allowing hot and humid conditions to persist before slightly better opportunities for showers return toward next weekend. Additional heat advisories may be issued if forecast heat index values continue to rise.
