Omaha, Nebraska – Residents across eastern Nebraska should stay alert this afternoon and evening as isolated thunderstorms could rapidly become severe, bringing destructive wind gusts, hail and dangerous travel conditions, especially north of the Platte River.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, there is a 20% to 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms developing after 4 p.m. While storm coverage is expected to remain isolated, any storm that forms could become severe. The greatest threat will be damaging straight-line wind gusts up to 75 mph, with isolated large hail also possible.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of northeast Nebraska, including areas around Norfolk, under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms. A broader Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) extends across much of eastern Nebraska, including Omaha, Lincoln, Columbus, Fremont and Beatrice.
The highest potential for severe weather is expected between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., with storms gradually weakening toward midnight. Wind damage could bring down tree limbs, produce isolated power outages and create hazardous conditions for motorists, particularly on open highways.
