Green Bay, Wisconsin – Residents across Wisconsin should prepare now for the potential of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening as storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes are expected to develop and move across the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, the entire forecast area is under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather today. Thunderstorms are expected to begin developing across northern Wisconsin during the mid to late afternoon before tracking southward through central and eastern parts of the state into the evening.
The greatest threats include wind gusts of up to 70 mph, hail up to 1 inch in diameter, and the potential for isolated tornadoes. Communities including Green Bay, Appleton, Wausau, Rhinelander, Shawano, Marinette, Sturgeon Bay and surrounding areas should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions as storms intensify.
Strong wind gusts could down tree limbs, cause scattered power outages and make travel hazardous, especially on north-south roadways. Heavy rain and dangerous lightning will also accompany stronger storms, leading to brief periods of reduced visibility for motorists.
Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, including Wireless Emergency Alerts, NOAA Weather Radio, trusted weather apps and local television or radio broadcasts. If a warning is issued or threatening weather approaches, move indoors immediately and stay away from windows until the storm passes.
Storms are expected to diminish later this evening, but additional updates, watches or warnings may be issued as confidence in the timing and intensity of individual storms improves.
