Lubbock, Texas – West Texas will remain firmly in the grip of summer heat Saturday, with temperatures approaching or exceeding 100 degrees across much of the South Plains and Rolling Plains. A few light morning showers will quickly fade, leaving behind a hot and mostly dry afternoon across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, isolated light rain showers early Saturday morning will gradually dissipate, with dry weather expected for the remainder of the day. While temperatures will be a few degrees lower than Friday, afternoon highs will still reach 98 degrees in Lubbock, Plainview, Friona, and Brownfield, 101 degrees in Aspermont, and 103 degrees in Childress.
Communities across the South Plains, including Lubbock, Plainview, Levelland, Brownfield, Friona, Littlefield, Childress, and Aspermont, should prepare for another day of intense afternoon heat. Travelers along Interstate 27, U.S. Highway 84, U.S. Highway 62/82, and U.S. Highway 287 should carry extra water and be prepared for dangerous heat if spending extended time outdoors.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon. Outdoor workers should take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and children and pets should never be left unattended inside parked vehicles.
Hot weather is expected to continue across the region through the weekend, with additional heat-related advisories possible if temperatures trend even higher in the coming days.
