Melbourne, Florida – Hot, humid weather will combine with increasing shower and thunderstorm activity across parts of East Central Florida today, while a moderate rip current risk continues along Atlantic beaches from Volusia County south through the Treasure Coast.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, isolated to scattered showers will move onshore from Cape Canaveral southward during the morning before expanding inland and south of Orlando through the afternoon as the east coast sea breeze develops. The greatest chance for showers and thunderstorms will be south of Cape Canaveral and Orlando, including Melbourne, Vero Beach, Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie.
Afternoon temperatures will climb into the low to mid-90s, including 95 degrees in Orlando, 96 in Leesburg, 90 in Melbourne, 90 in Vero Beach, 90 in Daytona Beach and 91 in Port St. Lucie. Peak heat index values are expected to range from 100 to 107 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended periods outdoors.
Along the coast, a moderate risk of rip currents remains in effect for Atlantic beaches across Volusia, Brevard, Space and Treasure Coast counties. Surf heights of 2 to 3 feet may appear manageable, but strong rip currents can quickly pull swimmers away from shore. Beachgoers are urged to swim near a lifeguard, remain aware of changing surf conditions and avoid entering the water if conditions appear unsafe.
Residents should stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon and seek shelter immediately if thunderstorms approach. Frequent lightning, heavy downpours and localized ponding on roads are possible with stronger storms.
The National Weather Service will continue monitoring today’s storm development and beach conditions, with additional advisories or warnings possible if thunderstorms become stronger or coastal hazards increase.
