South Bend, Indiana – Residents across Northern Indiana should use the weekend to prepare for a potential round of strong to severe thunderstorms late Sunday through Monday night, as forecasters monitor a developing weather pattern capable of producing damaging winds.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, one or more rounds of thunderstorms could develop beginning late Sunday afternoon and evening, continuing through Monday night. While confidence remains low regarding the exact timing, track and intensity of individual storms, the overall potential for severe weather is increasing.
A Level 1 of 5 severe weather risk is in place for much of the area late Sunday into early Monday, including South Bend, Warsaw, Fort Wayne, Plymouth, Logansport and surrounding communities. By Monday afternoon and evening, much of Northern Indiana is under a Level 2 of 5 severe weather risk, signaling a greater potential for scattered severe storms.
The National Weather Service says damaging straight-line winds currently appear to be the primary hazard, although the forecast could change as confidence improves over the next couple of days. Additional threats, including heavy rainfall, frequent lightning and isolated hail, will become clearer with future forecast updates.
Residents should review severe weather safety plans now, secure outdoor items before storms arrive and make sure multiple methods are available to receive warnings, especially overnight Sunday into Monday. Those with travel or outdoor plans should be prepared for changing conditions and possible delays.
