Austin, Texas – Dangerous heat will continue across South Central Texas today and Friday, with triple-digit temperatures and heat index values as high as 112 degrees creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors. A Heat Advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. for all of South Central Texas.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, afternoon highs will reach the upper 90s to around 101 degrees along the Interstate 35 corridor, while communities across the southern Rio Grande Plains could climb to 107 degrees. Heat index values are forecast to range from 108 to 112 degrees, producing moderate to major heat risk across the region.
Cities including Austin, San Antonio, New Braunfels, San Marcos, Georgetown and Kerrville are expected to top out near 99 to 102 degrees today, while Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Uvalde, Pearsall, Hondo and Carrizo Springs are forecast to reach between 102 and 107 degrees.
While most of the region will remain hot and dry, isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening across portions of the Coastal Plains as Tropical Storm Bertha approaches the western Gulf Coast. Any storms that develop could produce brief heavy rainfall and gusty winds, but widespread rainfall is not expected.
The persistent heat is forecast to continue through at least the weekend. Forecast highs remain near or above 100 degrees for many locations through Tuesday, while heat index values frequently exceed 105 degrees, especially during the afternoon.
Residents should limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned locations. Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
