Washington, D.C. – A slow-moving cold front will bring another round of showers and thunderstorms to parts of the Mid-Atlantic today, with a few storms capable of becoming strong to severe before noticeably cooler and less humid air settles into the region for the end of the workweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, the greatest chance for thunderstorms will be across central Virginia into southern Maryland this afternoon and evening. While many locations may only see scattered showers, a few stronger storms could produce damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning and heavy downpours.
Communities including Washington, D.C., Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, Lexington, Waldorf and portions of southern Maryland should remain alert for rapidly changing weather through the afternoon. High temperatures today will range from the low 70s in the mountains to the upper 80s across lower elevations, with west winds between 5 and 15 mph. Overnight lows will fall into the upper 40s to mid-60s behind the front.
As the front exits the region, high pressure will build in Thursday and Friday, bringing sunny skies, lower humidity and below-normal temperatures. Thursday’s highs will range from 70 to 82 degrees with morning lows between 53 and 65 degrees, while Friday warms slightly to 72 to 83 degrees after a cool start in the upper 50s to upper 60s.
