Boston, Massachusetts – Anyone with outdoor plans across Massachusetts this afternoon should remain weather aware as isolated thunderstorms could rapidly develop between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., with a few storms capable of producing damaging wind despite many communities staying dry.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston and the Storm Prediction Center, much of southern New England is under a Level 1 of 5 Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms today. The threat is expected to be highly localized, meaning only a small number of storms are anticipated, but any storm that strengthens could generate damaging wind gusts.
The greatest concern extends across central and eastern Massachusetts, including Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Lowell, Cambridge and surrounding communities. While much of the day will feature partly sunny, warm and humid conditions, the atmosphere may become unstable enough during the afternoon and early evening for isolated storm development.
Residents planning trips to parks, beaches or sporting events should have a reliable way to receive weather alerts and be prepared to move indoors if thunder is heard. Brief heavy rainfall, frequent lightning and sudden wind gusts may accompany any storm that forms, creating hazardous conditions for outdoor activities and travel.
The isolated storm threat is expected to diminish after 8 p.m. as daytime heating fades. Additional weather statements or warnings may be issued if stronger thunderstorms begin to develop during the afternoon.
