Utah – Rain is already falling across Salt Lake City, and colder air is moving in quickly, setting up a sharp temperature drop that could damage plants and create slick spots by early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a Freeze Watch is in effect from this evening through Friday morning, with temperatures expected to fall into the 20s and low 30s across the Wasatch Front. Areas like Provo, Ogden, and Tooele could see widespread frost, with colder pockets dipping below 20°F.

Through the day, rain continues before mixing with snow. Snow showers may develop by late afternoon into the evening, though accumulation in the valley remains light. Still, wet roads could turn slick as temperatures fall quickly after sunset.

Conditions shift rapidly tonight. As skies partially clear and winds ease, temperatures drop below freezing. Bridges and overpasses along I-15 and I-80 may develop icy patches, especially where moisture lingers.

The biggest concern is impact to early-season vegetation. Sensitive plants and gardens across Salt Lake City, West Valley City, and Sandy could suffer damage without protection. Residents should cover plants and disconnect outdoor hoses to prevent pipe issues.

By Friday afternoon, sunshine returns with highs near 50°F, helping conditions recover quickly. A warming trend follows into the weekend, with highs climbing into the 60s and upper 60s by Sunday.

Looking ahead, early next week brings even warmer spring weather, with temperatures pushing into the 70s.

If you have plants outside, now is the time to act. Are you preparing for the cold snap tonight?
