Boston, Massachusetts – Residents across Massachusetts should prepare for multiple rounds of thunderstorms beginning late Tuesday afternoon, with the highest risk for damaging wind gusts developing during the evening and overnight hours before another round of storms arrives Wednesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop between 4 p.m. Tuesday and 4 a.m. Wednesday, with isolated severe storms capable of producing localized damaging wind gusts. Torrential rainfall may also lead to pockets of flash flooding, especially in low-lying and poor-drainage areas. A second period of concern is expected from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, when additional thunderstorms could redevelop across southern New England.
The threat extends across much of Massachusetts, including Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Lowell, Lawrence, Brockton, New Bedford and Cape Cod. Travelers along Interstate 90, Interstate 93, Interstate 95, Route 3 and Route 24 should be prepared for sudden downpours, standing water and reduced visibility during the evening commute and overnight.
Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor furniture, charge electronic devices and monitor weather alerts throughout the next 36 hours. If a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued, move indoors immediately and avoid being outside during strong winds or lightning. Never drive through flooded roadways, as water depth can be difficult to judge.
While widespread severe weather is not expected, even isolated storms could produce damaging conditions where they develop. The National Weather Service will continue monitoring the evolving pattern, and additional Severe Thunderstorm or Flash Flood Warnings may be issued through Wednesday evening.
