Binghamton, New York – Residents across New York’s Southern Tier and northeast Pennsylvania should prepare for a potentially active afternoon as scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms develop, bringing the threat of damaging winds, isolated tornadoes, large hail and localized flash flooding during the busiest travel hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, thunderstorms are expected to develop during the early afternoon before spreading east through the evening, with the greatest threat occurring between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday. Damaging straight-line winds are expected to be the primary hazard, while isolated tornadoes, large hail and torrential rainfall are also possible. The highest severe weather risk extends across portions of northeast Pennsylvania, where scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms may develop.
Heavy rain accompanying the strongest storms could trigger localized flash flooding, particularly in areas that received significant rainfall over the weekend. Forecasters have highlighted a Marginal to Slight Risk for excessive rainfall, with poor-drainage areas, small streams and low-lying roads most susceptible to flooding.
Communities including Binghamton, Vestal, Johnson City, Endicott, Oneonta, Elmira, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Towanda should closely monitor conditions throughout the afternoon. Drivers along Interstate 81, Interstate 86, Interstate 88 and Interstate 380 could encounter sudden downpours, ponding on roadways, reduced visibility and isolated tree damage where the strongest storms develop.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items before storms arrive, keep mobile devices fully charged and ensure multiple ways to receive weather warnings. If a Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Warning is issued, move indoors immediately. Never drive across flooded roads, as water depth and roadway damage may not be visible.
The severe weather threat is expected to diminish later Tuesday night as storms move east, but additional Severe Thunderstorm, Tornado or Flash Flood Warnings may be issued through the evening.
