Allegan County, MI – The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office is reminding motorists about Michigan’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to slow down and, when possible, change lanes for stopped emergency and authorized service vehicles displaying flashing, rotating, or oscillating lights.
According to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, drivers approaching a stationary authorized vehicle with emergency lights activated must move into an open lane away from the stopped vehicle whenever it is safe to do so.
If changing lanes is not possible because of traffic, weather, or road conditions, motorists are required to slow to at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit and pass with caution while leaving as much space as possible.
Officials said the law applies to a wide range of authorized vehicles, including:
- Police vehicles
- Fire apparatus
- Ambulances
- Rescue vehicles
- Road service vehicles, including tow trucks and Michigan Department of Transportation safety service vehicles
- Solid waste collection vehicles
- Utility service vehicles
- Road maintenance vehicles
The sheriff’s office said the law is designed to improve safety for first responders, tow truck operators, road crews, utility workers, and others performing duties along Michigan roadways.
Drivers are encouraged to remain alert, reduce speed, and give roadside workers adequate space whenever they encounter stopped authorized vehicles.
