Watersmeet, Michigan – Residents across parts of Michigan’s western Upper Peninsula should move indoors immediately as a severe thunderstorm capable of producing damaging wind gusts and hail moves through the region. The strongest storms could knock down tree limbs, cause scattered power outages and create hazardous travel conditions through the morning.
According to the National Weather Service office in Marquette, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 10:30 a.m. EDT Monday for Watersmeet, Rockland and Bruce Crossing, along with surrounding communities in Gogebic and Ontonagon counties. Forecasters warn the storm may produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail.
Communities including Ewen, Greenland, Kenton and Sidnaw are also within the warned area. Drivers along U.S. Highway 45, M-28 and nearby rural roads should be prepared for sudden reductions in visibility from heavy rain, along with fallen branches or debris. Outdoor activities should be postponed until the storm has passed.
While the warning covers a relatively small population of about 3,900 residents, the storm has the potential to cause localized damage to trees, roofs and unsecured outdoor objects. Residents should secure loose items, stay away from windows and avoid sheltering beneath trees during the storm.
