Portland, Ore. – Bright skies are beginning to replace this morning’s clouds, but the real change arrives over the next 24 hours. A significant stretch of summer heat is building across northwest Oregon and southwest Washington, prompting a Heat Advisory as temperatures surge into the upper 90s by midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 11 p.m. Wednesday for the Portland metro area, the Willamette Valley, the Columbia River Gorge, Hood River Valley, and the greater Vancouver area. Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach 95 to 98 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Monday serves as the transition day. Morning clouds will gradually give way to sunshine with a high near 89 degrees. By Tuesday, Portland climbs to 96 degrees, followed by 97 degrees Wednesday, making it the hottest day of the week. While wildfire smoke from fires outside the region could slightly reduce daytime highs, officials say conditions will still be dangerously warm.
The heat will affect commuters, outdoor workers, and anyone spending extended time outside. Travelers along Interstate 5, Interstate 84, U.S. 26, and area bridges should keep extra water in their vehicles and avoid leaving children or pets inside parked cars, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
Stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, and schedule strenuous activities during the early morning. If your home lacks air conditioning, use fans, close blinds during the afternoon, and check on older neighbors or anyone vulnerable to the heat.
A 20 percent chance of light showers arrives Wednesday night, followed by a cooler Thursday with highs near 91 degrees. While the worst of the heat eases later in the week, warm summer weather is expected to continue across the Pacific Northwest.
