Pendleton, Ore. – Patchy smoke hangs over parts of eastern Oregon this Monday morning, but the bigger story is already taking shape. A prolonged stretch of dangerous summer heat is set to arrive Tuesday and intensify through Wednesday, when temperatures climb into the triple digits across the Columbia Basin and surrounding valleys.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, an Extreme Heat Watch takes effect Tuesday afternoon and continues through Thursday evening. High temperatures are expected to range from 100 to 102 degrees, with parts of the Columbia Basin potentially reaching 105 degrees. Officials say Wednesday is likely to be the hottest day, bringing widespread Moderate to Major HeatRisk across the region.

Monday offers one final opportunity to prepare before the hottest air arrives. Patchy smoke will linger through late morning, then skies remain mostly cloudy with a high near 90 degrees. By Tuesday, sunshine returns with a high near 98 degrees, followed by 101 degrees Wednesday. Thursday stays just as hot with another high around 101 degrees, although a 20 percent chance of showers before late morning could briefly interrupt the dry pattern.

Travel along Interstate 84, U.S. Highway 395, and area roadways should remain in good condition, but vehicles can become dangerously hot within minutes. Keep extra water in the car, avoid leaving children or pets inside unattended, and schedule outdoor work during the early morning whenever possible.

The prolonged heat will increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially for older adults, outdoor workers, and those without reliable cooling. Drink water frequently, take breaks in air-conditioned spaces, and check on neighbors who may need assistance.

Relief appears limited through Thursday before temperatures begin easing later in the week. Additional heat headlines could be issued if the forecast trends even hotter.
