According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. CDT Monday for Wichita and much of south-central and southeast Kansas. Afternoon temperatures will reach 99 degrees, while the heat index climbs to around 106 degrees. An Extreme Heat Watch then takes effect Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening as heat index values could reach 110 degrees.
The hottest part of Monday arrives during the afternoon commute. Anyone working outdoors should schedule frequent breaks, drink water before feeling thirsty, and seek air-conditioned buildings whenever possible. Heat illness can develop rapidly during prolonged exposure.
Travelers on Interstate 135, U.S. 54 and the Kansas Turnpike should expect shimmering pavement and extreme vehicle temperatures after parking in direct sunlight. Check tire pressure, keep extra water in the car, and never leave children or pets inside a vehicle.
Tuesday becomes even more concerning. Sunshine continues with a high near 101 degrees, while oppressive humidity pushes the heat index toward 108 to 110 degrees. These conditions significantly increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for vulnerable residents.
Relief begins arriving Wednesday as highs ease to around 92 degrees under sunny skies. By Thursday and Friday, temperatures remain in the lower 90s, with isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorm chances of 20 to 30 percent. The National Weather Service notes no organized severe weather is expected through Tuesday, although thunderstorm opportunities increase later in the week.
Long-range outlooks continue to favor above-normal temperatures into late next week, meaning the broader summer pattern is likely to persist across Kansas.
