New Orleans, La. – The pavement is already warming under bright sunshine, and the sticky Gulf air is quickly turning the city into a sauna. By this afternoon, simply walking outside could feel like stepping into temperatures near 110 degrees, making heat safety the top concern across southeast Louisiana.

According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans/Baton Rouge, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from noon until 7 p.m. Monday for southeast Louisiana and portions of southern Mississippi. Heat index values are expected to reach 110 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Monday will be sunny and hot with a high near 96 degrees. Only a slight chance of a late afternoon thunderstorm exists after 5 p.m., so many communities will remain dry while humidity pushes apparent temperatures well above the actual air temperature. Drink water frequently, take breaks in air conditioning, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.

Travelers along Interstate 10, Interstate 610, U.S. 90, and the Pontchartrain Expressway should keep extra water in their vehicles. Anyone working outdoors should schedule frequent cooling breaks, as vehicle interiors can become dangerously hot within minutes.

Tuesday brings another hot day with a high near 96 degrees and a 50 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms. While widespread severe weather is not expected, stronger storms could produce frequent lightning, brief heavy rainfall, and localized ponding on roads during the evening commute.

By Wednesday, July 22, temperatures ease slightly into the lower 90s, but scattered thunderstorms become more common across the metro area. Daily rain chances continue into Thursday, offering brief cooling but also creating periods of wet pavement and reduced visibility for drivers.
