Huntsville, Ala. – The air already feels heavy across the Tennessee Valley, and the combination of building heat and rising humidity will make it feel even hotter by this afternoon. While a few storms could pop up later today, the biggest concern through Tuesday remains the dangerous heat.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Monday through 8 p.m. Tuesday for north, central, northeast and northwest Alabama, along with portions of southern middle Tennessee. Heat index values are expected to reach 105 to 108 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Monday will be mostly sunny with a high near 93 degrees, although scattered showers and thunderstorms could develop after noon. Any storms may briefly produce heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds before moving out. Despite those rain chances, humidity will keep conditions uncomfortable, with heat index values climbing to 107 degrees.
Tuesday stays hot with a high near 95 degrees and heat index values approaching 108 degrees. Isolated showers and thunderstorms remain possible during the afternoon, but many neighborhoods will spend most of the day under hot, humid conditions.
Travelers along Interstate 565, Interstate 65, and U.S. Highway 72 should stay alert for brief reductions in visibility if thunderstorms develop. Keep water in your vehicle, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, and never leave children or pets inside parked cars.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, July 22, storm chances increase again as another disturbance approaches. Temperatures ease slightly into the lower 90s, but muggy conditions will persist. More scattered showers and thunderstorms remain possible through Thursday.
