Roanoke, Virginia – Strong thunderstorms could develop within hours across central and western Virginia, with damaging wind gusts and hail posing a risk during the afternoon commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a marginal risk for severe weather is in place mainly along and north of the I-64 and US-60 corridors, including Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Charlottesville. Storms are expected to develop this afternoon and continue into the evening.

Damaging winds are the primary concern, with gusts strong enough to bring down small branches and cause isolated power outages. Hail up to the size of quarters is also possible in stronger storms.

Drivers along I-64, US-220, and Route 29 should be prepared for sudden downpours, reduced visibility, and brief hazardous travel conditions during peak hours.

While the overall severe threat remains limited, any storm that strengthens could produce quick impacts. Residents are urged to stay alert for warnings and monitor conditions as storms develop this afternoon.
