Albany, New York – Slick roads and icy surfaces could develop across eastern New York within hours Thursday morning as freezing rain moves into the region and lingers into the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a wintry mix including freezing rain is expected to develop Thursday morning and continue into Thursday afternoon. Ice accumulations will range from a light glaze up to 0.10 inches for most areas, but higher elevations in the southern Green Mountains could see up to 0.25 inches of ice.

The primary concern is hazardous travel, especially on untreated roads, sidewalks, and elevated surfaces. Areas along I-90, I-87, and Route 7 could see slick conditions develop during the daytime hours Thursday, particularly in higher terrain and rural locations.

Temperatures will remain in the upper 30s to low 40s in valley locations, while colder air lingers in elevated areas, allowing ice to persist longer. By Friday, a significant warmup pushes highs into the mid-60s to mid-70s across the region, melting any remaining ice.

Residents are urged to use caution when traveling Thursday, especially on non-paved surfaces, and stay alert for changing conditions. Additional advisories may be issued as precipitation develops.
