Caribou, Maine – Drivers across northern Maine are dealing with slick, icy roads right now as freezing rain and sleet create hazardous conditions during the early Wednesday commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, ice accumulations up to 0.25 inches have developed across the Central Highlands and Upper Penobscot Valley, with the heaviest icing stretching from Millinocket to Presque Isle and Houlton. Patchy fog is also reducing visibility in spots, adding another layer of concern for early-morning travel.
Roadways, especially untreated secondary roads and bridges, may remain icy through at least mid-morning before temperatures gradually rise and precipitation tapers off. Major routes like I-95 through Bangor north to Houlton could see slower travel speeds and isolated slick spots.
Residents are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution on sidewalks and driveways where a thin glaze may not be immediately visible.
Another round of mixed precipitation is expected to arrive late Thursday night into Friday, with additional ice possible north of the Upper Penobscot Valley. A third system could bring more wintry mix by the weekend, keeping conditions unsettled across the region.
