Phoenix, Ariz. – Drivers across the Phoenix area could encounter sudden gusty winds and spotty storms within hours, with a second round of activity moving in overnight and impacting the Wednesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, isolated showers and thunderstorms will develop this afternoon and evening, mainly across higher terrain surrounding the Valley. Storm chances will then shift into the lower deserts overnight as a cold front moves through.
The greatest impacts are expected north and east of Phoenix, including areas like Scottsdale, Mesa, and Payson, where storm chances increase overnight into early Wednesday morning. Wind gusts could exceed 35 mph, with brief rain creating slick roads and reduced visibility.
Lower desert locations may see lighter, more isolated activity, but even brief showers could create hazardous driving conditions due to oil buildup on roads. Higher terrain areas face a greater chance for measurable rainfall.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, use caution on wet roads, and stay alert for changing conditions overnight. Storm chances will taper by Wednesday morning, but additional updates are possible as the system moves through.
