South Bend, Indiana – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across northern Indiana this afternoon, bringing the threat of damaging wind gusts over 60 mph, isolated large hail and localized flooding. The most active period is expected between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. EDT, when storms could rapidly intensify as they move across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, much of the area is under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms, with an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) extending into far eastern portions of the forecast area near the Ohio border. Forecasters say damaging straight-line winds will be the primary hazard, while isolated large hail and heavy downpours capable of causing localized flooding are also possible.
Communities including South Bend, Fort Wayne, Warsaw, Plymouth, Angola, La Porte, Benton Harbor, Marion and Muncie should be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions this afternoon. Motorists traveling on Interstates 80/90, 69, 94 and U.S. 30 may encounter sudden reductions in visibility, ponding water and scattered tree debris where stronger storms develop.
Residents should secure loose outdoor objects, have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and move indoors immediately if thunder is heard or a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued. Never drive through flooded roadways, as even shallow water can hide dangerous conditions.
The severe weather threat is expected to diminish after 7 p.m., but additional severe thunderstorm warnings may be issued as storms develop across northern Indiana this afternoon.
