Chicago, Illinois – Strong thunderstorms are expected to develop along a cold front across northern Illinois today, with the greatest threat focused near and south of Interstate 80 this afternoon and evening. Damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning and torrential downpours could create hazardous travel conditions, especially during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, isolated thunderstorms may begin developing between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with storm coverage increasing between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. The most widespread activity is expected from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., particularly across areas south of I-80. The strongest storms will be capable of producing damaging winds strong enough to down tree limbs, along with intense rainfall and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning.
Communities including Joliet, Kankakee, Pontiac, Ottawa, Valparaiso, Rensselaer, Paxton and surrounding areas face the greatest chance of stronger storms, while isolated activity is also possible around the Chicago metro. Motorists traveling along Interstates 80, 55, 57, 65 and 94 should be prepared for rapidly changing weather, reduced visibility and ponding water during heavy rain.
Forecasters are also monitoring the potential for another round of severe weather on Monday and Monday night. The National Weather Service says conditions will become favorable for several waves of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and torrential downpours, although the exact timing and areas of greatest impact will become clearer over the next couple of days.
After one more hot and humid day, cooler and less humid air is expected to settle into the region next week. High temperatures will fall into the upper 70s and lower 80s Sunday, followed by low to upper 80s Monday through Wednesday, offering a break from the recent heat.
