La Crosse, Wisconsin – Residents across western Wisconsin, southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa should prepare for an active weather day on Monday as multiple rounds of thunderstorms have the potential to become severe from the morning through the evening. While the exact timing and location of the strongest storms remain uncertain, forecasters say all severe weather hazards are possible if storms intensify.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, scattered severe thunderstorms could develop throughout the day Monday, with the region under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather. Damaging wind gusts, large hail, heavy rainfall and a few tornadoes are all possible with the strongest storms.

Communities including La Crosse, Eau Claire, Rochester, Winona, Decorah, Prairie du Chien, Tomah, Mason City, Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas should closely monitor the forecast as confidence in the overall threat remains high, even though the exact timing and storm track will become clearer closer to the event.

Heavy rainfall could also create localized flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas, especially if multiple rounds of thunderstorms move over the same locations. Drivers should be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions and reduced visibility during heavier downpours.

Residents are encouraged to review their severe weather safety plans now, secure outdoor items before storms develop and make sure they have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. If a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning is issued, move to a sturdy building immediately and stay away from windows.

Forecast details are expected to become more refined over the next day, and additional watches or warnings may be issued as confidence in the timing and severity of Monday’s storms increases.
