Reno, Nev. – Bright sunshine is quickly warming northern Nevada, and the cool start to the day is fading fast. Dry air, light winds, and rising temperatures will make this afternoon feel much hotter, while the next weather change is already taking shape for early next week.
According to the National Weather Service, Reno will climb to 94 degrees today under sunny skies after a comfortable morning near 60 degrees. Winds remain light before shifting to the west around 5 mph during the afternoon, creating favorable travel conditions across much of western Nevada.
The warming trend continues through the weekend. Sunday’s high reaches 96 degrees, making it the hottest day of the current stretch. Monday remains very warm near 94 degrees before temperatures ease slightly to 93 degrees Tuesday. Tuesday also brings the first opportunity for a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms after 11 a.m., followed by a chance of showers Tuesday evening.
Travel along Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 395, Interstate 580, and Mount Rose Highway should remain smooth through Monday. By Tuesday afternoon, however, drivers should stay alert for rapidly changing skies, isolated lightning, brief downpours, and localized reductions in visibility if storms develop.
Elsewhere across the West, monsoonal moisture continues producing scattered thunderstorms across portions of the Desert Southwest and Four Corners. While Reno stays mostly dry through Monday, meteorologists are monitoring that moisture as it gradually pushes northward, increasing the potential for isolated storms by Tuesday.
Heat remains the primary concern over the next several days. Drink water frequently, limit strenuous afternoon activity, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles. Long-range outlooks continue to favor warmer-than-average temperatures into late next week, even with occasional afternoon storm chances.
