San Diego, Calif. – Powerful waves will soon replace the calm morning surf along San Diego County beaches. While inland neighborhoods enjoy another comfortable summer day, the coastline is preparing for rougher ocean conditions that could make the water far more dangerous than it appears.
Sunny skies and seasonable temperatures continue across much of San Diego, but a High Surf Advisory is set to take effect Sunday at 5 a.m. PDT and remain in effect until Monday at 11 p.m. PDT. The greatest concern will be along west-facing beaches, where larger breaking waves and stronger rip currents are expected.
According to the National Weather Service San Diego, today’s weather remains mostly sunny with a high near 79 degrees after early clouds give way to sunshine. Similar conditions continue into Sunday before surf conditions become hazardous. Highs hold near 79 to 80 degrees through Tuesday with cool nights in the upper 60s.
Beach visitors should use extra caution at popular locations including Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, La Jolla Shores, Coronado Beach, and Torrey Pines State Beach. Strong rip currents can quickly pull swimmers away from shore, while large waves may sweep onto rocks, jetties, and coastal walkways without warning.
Drivers along Interstate 5, Pacific Highway, and North Harbor Drive should not expect weather-related travel problems, but anyone heading toward the coast should prepare for crowded parking areas and changing beach conditions as the advisory begins. If you’re visiting the shoreline, stay well back from rocks and never turn your back on the ocean.
The broader weather pattern remains quiet across Southern California while monsoonal thunderstorms stay focused well east over Arizona and New Mexico. By Tuesday, sunshine continues with highs near 80 degrees, offering pleasant weather away from the surf.
