Iowa is starting breezy with increasing clouds, and that steady wind is your first clue that changes are coming fast. Skies will continue to darken, and storm energy builds as the day progresses.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms is in place later today into the evening, especially across southeast Iowa. Large hail and damaging wind gusts are the primary threats as storms begin to organize.

Across Des Moines, drivers along I-35 and I-80 should prepare for sudden changes in visibility by late day. Rain may begin in bursts, quickly turning roads slick. In West Des Moines, Ankeny, and Altoona, gusty winds could pick up ahead of storms, blowing debris into streets before rainfall begins. Plan ahead and secure outdoor items early.

Storm chances increase significantly into midweek. By Wednesday, rain becomes widespread, with periods of heavier rainfall likely into Thursday. Some areas could see steady rain for hours, raising concerns about localized flooding in low-lying spots.

Colder air arrives midweek as well. Northern Iowa may see a brief rain-snow mix late Wednesday into early Thursday, especially during nighttime hours. While major impacts are not expected, slick spots could develop if temperatures dip close to freezing.

By Friday into Saturday, additional rain chances continue, keeping the pattern active as April begins. Temperatures fluctuate but remain near seasonal levels before trending warmer again late next week.
