Michigan is already seeing wet roads and gusty winds, and conditions will become more volatile as storms redevelop through the afternoon. Rain is falling in bursts, and visibility can drop quickly on busy routes.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a slight risk of severe thunderstorms is in place south of I-96, including the Grand Rapids metro. Storms developing this afternoon into the evening may produce large hail and strong wind gusts, along with minor flooding in low-lying areas.

Across Grand Rapids, drivers on US-131 and I-196 should prepare for sudden downpours and slick pavement during peak travel hours. In Wyoming, Kentwood, and Holland, heavy rain could briefly overwhelm drainage systems. Secure outdoor items now and stay alert for lightning as storms intensify.

The bigger shift arrives midweek. By Wednesday night into Thursday, colder air moves in and may change rain to a wintry mix north of the city. Areas toward Big Rapids and Mount Pleasant could see freezing rain or sleet, raising concerns for icy roads and scattered power outages.

Rain continues on and off through Thursday, with additional showers lingering into Friday and Saturday. Temperatures swing sharply, dropping into the 40s midweek before rebounding slightly.

Plan for changing conditions each day. Expect wet roads, then potentially icy travel late in the week.
