Raleigh, North Carolina – A statewide burn ban is now in effect as gusty winds and dry air combine to create dangerous fire conditions through 8 p.m. Tuesday across central North Carolina.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, wind gusts between 20 and 25 mph and relative humidity values dropping as low as 40 percent are driving an increased fire danger risk from late morning through the evening hours. Temperatures will climb into the upper 70s to low 80s, further drying vegetation and increasing the chance for rapid fire spread.

The North Carolina Forest Service has issued a burn ban for all 100 counties, canceling all burning permits until further notice. Areas including Raleigh, Durham, Fayetteville, and Greensboro are all under this elevated risk, with the greatest concern during the afternoon when winds peak.

Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning, properly discard cigarettes, and secure equipment that could spark flames. Even small fires can spread quickly under these conditions.

The fire danger threat will ease after sunset as winds diminish, but dry conditions may persist, and additional restrictions or advisories could remain in place.
