Government Camp, Oregon – Travel across the northern and central Oregon Cascades could become hazardous within hours late Tuesday night as a significant snowstorm moves into the region, impacting major mountain passes through Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Tuesday night through Thursday afternoon for the Cascades, including Government Camp, Santiam Pass, and Willamette Pass. Snowfall totals between 10 and 18 inches are possible, with wind gusts up to 35 mph.
Conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly by early Wednesday, especially along key travel routes such as Highways 20, 22, and 58. Heavy snow and gusty winds may reduce visibility and create snow-covered roads, particularly across Marion and Lane County passes where the heaviest accumulation is expected.
Areas like Timothy Lake, McKenzie Pass, and Santiam Junction could see prolonged snowfall, leading to difficult or delayed travel during both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Bridges and overpasses will be especially slick as temperatures remain cold.
Drivers should prepare for winter conditions by carrying chains, winterizing vehicles, and checking Oregon DOT updates before traveling. Delaying non-essential trips through the Cascades is strongly recommended.
The watch remains in effect through Thursday afternoon, with warnings likely as confidence in snowfall totals increases.
