Miami, Fla. – Thunderstorms will continue to develop across South Florida through the evening, with the greatest concentration expected over the southeastern part of the state. Some storms could become strong enough to produce torrential rainfall, frequent lightning, gusty winds and small hail before gradually weakening later tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, scattered showers and thunderstorms will persist into the early evening as an upper-level low continues to fuel unsettled weather across the region. The strongest storms may produce heavy downpours capable of causing localized street flooding, along with strong wind gusts, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and small hail.

The highest rain chances are focused across the Atlantic coast metro, including Boca Raton, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Homestead, West Palm Beach and surrounding communities. Rain chances gradually decrease later this evening, but storms that develop could quickly reduce visibility on major roadways including Interstates 95, 75 and Florida’s Turnpike.

Residents with outdoor plans should move indoors immediately if thunder is heard and avoid flooded streets, where water can rise quickly during periods of intense rainfall. Boaters should also remain alert for rapidly changing weather and dangerous lightning over nearby coastal waters.

While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, isolated stronger thunderstorms may still produce hazardous conditions through the evening. The National Weather Service advises residents to continue monitoring forecasts and be prepared for additional advisories or warnings if stronger storms develop across Southeast Florida.
