Chicago, IL – Two convicted felons are facing felony weapons charges after Chicago police recovered two firearms during an investigation at CTA Red Line stations that began with a tip from a community member.

According to the Chicago Police Department, officers assigned to the Public Transportation Section Tactical Team were conducting a platform check during the early morning hours of July 15, 2026, at the Jackson Red Line station when a community member reported seeing an individual carrying a firearm.

Police said tactical officers relayed the suspect’s description to the department’s Strategic Decision Support Center (SDSC), where personnel used live surveillance cameras to track the individual through the transit system. Officers then conducted an investigatory stop of 22-year-old Davonte Sims and recovered a firearm from his bag.

According to police, while Sims was being taken into custody, he told officers that another man, 28-year-old Terry Sturgis, had allegedly threatened him into holding the bag containing the firearm and that Sturgis also possessed another gun.

Using live camera footage, SDSC personnel tracked Sturgis to the Garfield Red Line station, where tactical officers detained him. Investigators said surveillance video showed Sturgis placing a bag containing a firearm on a seat at the station platform. Officers recovered the weapon and took Sturgis into custody.

Police said both men are convicted felons. Sims was charged with felon in possession of a weapon and criminal trespass on CTA property. Sturgis was charged with possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender. The charges are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
