Kalamazoo County, MI – A Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputy is in stable condition after being shot during a struggle with a suspect Friday morning, an encounter that led to the theft of a patrol vehicle and a pursuit across the county before ending in a crash.
According to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 8:51 a.m. Friday, July 17, to the 6300 block of East AB Avenue for a report of a larceny from an automobile in progress.
During the encounter, the deputy was shot following a struggle with the suspect, authorities said. The suspect then allegedly stole the deputy’s patrol cruiser, prompting a chase through multiple areas of Kalamazoo County.
The pursuit ended when the stolen patrol vehicle crashed in Kalamazoo Township near the Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the suspect was taken into custody and is receiving medical treatment before being lodged in jail. The individual’s identity and any potential charges have not yet been released.
The wounded deputy was initially treated at a hospital in Plainwell before being transferred to a local hospital for additional care. The sheriff’s office said the deputy is in stable condition.
Investigators have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and the incident remains under active investigation.
