Spotsylvania County, VA – The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an ongoing phone scam in which callers allegedly impersonate members of the agency and falsely claim victims have outstanding arrest warrants that can be resolved by sending money.

According to the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office, investigators have received multiple reports of scammers pretending to be Captain Bryner while contacting residents by phone. The callers allegedly tell victims they have a warrant for their arrest and can “take care of it” by making an immediate payment over the phone.

Authorities emphasized that the calls are fraudulent.

The sheriff’s office said it will never call residents demanding payment to avoid arrest. Officials also warned that scammers are using spoofed phone numbers that may make it appear the call is coming from the Sheriff’s Office, even though the caller has no affiliation with the agency.

Residents who receive one of these calls are urged to:

  • Hang up immediately.
  • Never send money or provide personal or financial information.
  • Contact the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office directly using its published non-emergency phone number if they are unsure whether a call is legitimate.

Officials also reminded the public that law enforcement officers do not collect fines or resolve warrants through gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or credit card payments over the phone.

The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging residents to share the warning with family members, friends, and neighbors to help prevent additional victims.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted by the scam should contact the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office.
