Fort Wayne, IN – A pedestrian is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday night at a downtown Fort Wayne intersection, prompting an extensive investigation and road closures.
According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, officers responded at approximately 10:27 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, to the intersection of South Lafayette Street and East Washington Boulevard following reports of a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.
Investigators determined a single vehicle struck the pedestrian while the driver was making a westbound turn onto East Washington Boulevard. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital and remained in critical condition, according to police.
Authorities said alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors in the crash based on the preliminary investigation.
Due to the severity of the pedestrian’s injuries, the Fort Wayne Police Department’s Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation. The department’s Air Support Unit (ASU) also assisted investigators at the scene.
Police advised motorists that the intersection of East Washington Boulevard and South Lafayette Street would remain closed to westbound traffic for several hours while investigators documented evidence and processed the crash scene.
