Ellicott City, MD – The Howard County Sheriff’s Office has announced the rollout of artificial intelligence-powered language translation technology integrated into deputies’ body-worn cameras, a move officials say will improve communication during law enforcement encounters with residents and visitors who have limited English proficiency.

According to the Howard County Sheriff’s Office, the new technology provides real-time translation in more than 50 languages and can automatically detect the language being spoken. Officials said the feature will allow deputies to communicate more effectively during traffic stops, court security operations, civil process interactions, warrant service and other public safety situations.

Sheriff Marcus Harris said clear communication is essential to effective law enforcement and building trust with the community.

“This technology helps our deputies better serve Howard County’s diverse population by breaking down language barriers and ensuring everyone can understand important information during interactions with our Office,” Harris said in the department’s announcement.

The sheriff’s office said the AI translation capability expands the functionality of its existing body-worn camera program while maintaining the transparency and accountability those systems are intended to provide. Officials believe the technology will improve communication without replacing deputies’ existing procedures for documenting incidents and interacting with the public.

Howard County officials also said the new system reflects the agency’s broader effort to adopt technology that enhances public safety while providing equitable and accessible services for residents and visitors.

The department serves one of Maryland’s most diverse counties, and officials said improving communication with people who speak different languages can help reduce misunderstandings and improve interactions during routine and emergency situations alike.

The AI-powered translation system is now being implemented for use by deputies throughout the Howard County Sheriff’s Office.
