Memphis, TN – Months of persistent rainfall have brought significant drought relief across much of the Mid-South, marking a dramatic turnaround from conditions seen earlier this spring.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the region has experienced substantial drought improvement over the past two months thanks to a prolonged pattern of frequent rainfall. New maps released by the U.S. Drought Monitor compare conditions as of May 19 with the latest assessment from July 7, highlighting widespread recovery across the National Weather Service Memphis forecast area.

In May, large portions of eastern Arkansas, west Tennessee, north Mississippi, and the Missouri Bootheel were experiencing moderate to exceptional drought. The latest outlook shows much of that severe dryness has eased, with many areas now free of drought or experiencing only abnormally dry conditions.

The improvement follows a sustained stretch of rain events that replenished soil moisture, increased streamflows, and helped restore water supplies throughout the region. While some pockets of dryness remain—particularly across parts of northeast Arkansas and surrounding areas—the overall drought picture has improved considerably.

The recent rainfall has also benefited agriculture during the heart of the growing season, reducing stress on crops and lowering wildfire concerns that often accompany prolonged dry conditions.

Forecasters note that drought conditions can quickly change depending on future rainfall patterns, and residents are encouraged to stay informed as summer weather continues.

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor is updated weekly and provides a snapshot of drought conditions across the country.
