Utah – Bright sunshine is already giving way to another scorching day across northern Utah. Asphalt will heat quickly through the afternoon, and triple-digit temperatures will make even short periods outdoors feel exhausting before isolated storms begin creeping back into the picture later this week.

According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday for much of northern and central Utah. Salt Lake City is expected to reach 102 degrees this afternoon under mostly sunny skies. Officials warn that dangerously hot conditions will continue, with warm nights providing little relief.

Heat-related illnesses become much more likely during prolonged exposure. Drink water frequently, seek air-conditioned spaces during the hottest part of the afternoon, and avoid strenuous outdoor work whenever possible. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.

Travel conditions remain dry, but drivers along Interstate 15, Interstate 80 and Interstate 215 should prepare for intense sun glare and extremely hot pavement during the afternoon commute. Outdoor recreation in the Wasatch Front and nearby valleys should be scheduled for the early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower.

The weather pattern begins to evolve Tuesday as isolated afternoon thunderstorms develop after 3 p.m. A 20 percent chance of storms could bring brief gusty winds and lightning. By Wednesday, scattered afternoon thunderstorms become a little more widespread with a 30 percent chance of showers and storms while temperatures ease to around 96 degrees.

Across the western United States, persistent heat remains the dominant weather story, while severe thunderstorms and flash flooding continue to target portions of the Plains and Midwest. Utah stays hot through midweek, but increasing monsoon moisture may provide occasional afternoon relief later in the week.
