Marquette, Michigan – The cool breeze off Lake Superior won’t provide much relief today. Sunshine is quickly taking over across the Upper Peninsula, and temperatures are climbing toward levels rarely experienced this far north. By early afternoon, conditions will become dangerous for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect from noon until 10 p.m. EDT today across portions of the Upper Peninsula. Heat index values are expected to reach 95 to 102 degrees, while Marquette itself could experience a heat index as high as 104 degrees this afternoon. A Heat Advisory continues through this evening in surrounding areas.
The warning includes Marquette, Baraga, Dickinson, Gogebic, Iron, Keweenaw, Ontonagon, Northern and Southern Houghton counties, including communities such as Iron Mountain, Houghton, Hancock, L’Anse, Ontonagon and Ironwood.
Marquette is expected to climb to 98 degrees today before another hot day arrives Tuesday with highs near 95 degrees. West winds of 5 to 15 mph, with gusts approaching 20 mph, will do little to ease the oppressive heat. Drivers on US-41, M-28 and M-35 should be prepared for intense sunshine and rapidly heating vehicle interiors during the afternoon commute.
While severe thunderstorms and flash flooding are expected farther southwest across parts of the Midwest today, Upper Michigan’s primary concern remains dangerous heat. Dry weather dominates through Tuesday before cooler air arrives by Wednesday, dropping highs into the lower 80s.
Drink water often, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours of the day. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
The Climate Prediction Center continues to indicate above-normal temperatures over the next 6 to 10 days, suggesting additional stretches of summer warmth remain possible across the Great Lakes.
