Hastings, Nebraska – Sunshine is taking control across south-central Nebraska, and each afternoon will feel noticeably hotter than the last. By midweek, sidewalks, parking lots and open fields will soak up the summer sun, setting the stage for several days of increasing heat across the region.
According to the National Weather Service, patchy fog early this morning quickly gives way to sunshine, with temperatures climbing to around 90 degrees today. Southeast winds between 5 and 10 mph will keep conditions relatively calm, but the warming trend accelerates over the next several days.
Drivers along U.S. Highway 6, U.S. Highway 281 and Interstate 80 should encounter excellent travel conditions after the early fog dissipates. Visibility may briefly be reduced around sunrise in low-lying areas, but dry pavement and light winds will dominate through the afternoon.
The bigger story is the prolonged stretch of heat. Tuesday reaches 91 degrees, followed by 93 degrees Wednesday. Highs climb to 95 degrees Thursday, 97 degrees Friday, 98 degrees Saturday, and approach 99 degrees Sunday. Residents working outdoors, tending gardens or attending summer events should plan for increasing heat stress during the hottest part of each afternoon.
Unlike areas of the Plains expecting severe thunderstorms, Hastings remains under a stable weather pattern through much of the upcoming week. No organized storm chances appear in the official outlook, and tornado potential remains extremely low at this time. Dry weather will allow crops to mature, but fields and lawns may begin drying quickly if the pattern continues.
Drink plenty of water, limit strenuous afternoon activity, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles. Even when temperatures remain below 100 degrees, vehicles can become dangerously hot within minutes.
