Nashville, Tenn. – Dark clouds may bubble up over Middle Tennessee before the afternoon drive, even though much of the morning starts warm and quiet. Roads are dry for now, but scattered showers and thunderstorms could quickly change conditions later today. Keep an eye on the sky if you’re heading out on I-40, I-65, I-24, or Briley Parkway.

According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms develops after early afternoon, with the greatest potential after 5 p.m. High temperatures will reach around 87 degrees, while light northeast winds become north between 5 and 10 mph. Rainfall totals should remain under one-tenth of an inch outside of thunderstorms, although heavier downpours are possible beneath stronger cells.

The Weather Prediction Center continues highlighting portions of the Midwest and central United States for severe thunderstorms and flash flooding. Middle Tennessee is not in the core of that higher-end risk, but locally heavy rain, cloud-to-ground lightning, gusty winds, and brief ponding on roads remain possible with stronger afternoon storms. An isolated severe storm cannot be ruled out, though widespread severe weather is not expected.

Motorists should allow extra travel time during the evening commute. Wet pavement and reduced visibility could briefly slow traffic around downtown Nashville and along heavily traveled corridors. If thunder roars, move indoors and postpone outdoor recreation until storms pass.

Storm chances continue through midweek. Tuesday brings another 50% chance of afternoon thunderstorms with highs near 88 degrees. Wednesday reaches 90 degrees with another 50% chance of afternoon storms before temperatures climb to 92 degrees Thursday. By Friday and through the weekend, highs reach the lower 90s with isolated afternoon storms remaining possible.

Long-range outlooks favor above-normal temperatures during the 6-to-10-day period, signaling a stronger midsummer pattern settling across Tennessee.
