Massachusetts – Sunshine is quickly taking over eastern Massachusetts, and the comfortable start to the morning won’t last. Pavement will heat rapidly through the afternoon as temperatures surge into the 90s, setting the stage for one of the hottest stretches of the week. Residents heading outdoors should prepare now before the hottest air arrives.
According to the National Weather Service, Wakefield and much of the Greater Boston region will climb to 91 degrees today under sunny skies. Even hotter weather follows Tuesday, when temperatures are expected to reach 99 degrees, with heat index values as high as 103 degrees. Southwest winds of 8 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph, may offer little relief during peak heating.
Drivers along Interstate 95, Interstate 93, Route 128, Interstate 90 and Route 1 should anticipate intense afternoon heat affecting vehicles and anyone traveling without air conditioning. Construction crews, utility workers and anyone spending extended time outdoors should schedule frequent breaks, stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
Across the Northeast, high pressure remains firmly in control, bringing dry conditions while much of the nation’s active storm track stays focused over the Plains, Midwest and parts of the Southeast. No organized severe weather is expected locally through midweek, and tornado potential remains extremely low. The primary concern is prolonged heat, especially with warm nights limiting overnight cooling.
Wednesday remains hot with highs near 97 degrees before temperatures ease slightly later in the week. Despite the modest cooldown, afternoons will continue feeling very summer-like across eastern Massachusetts.
